Sport Fishing Advisory Committees represent communities or geographic areas within a Regional Sport Fishing Advisory Council. They provide formal advice and recommendations in the form of recorded motions to the appropriate Regional Council on matters relating to tidal recreational fisheries and non tidal anadromous fisheries.
They bring to the discussions the general views, knowledge and experience of those they represent, and bring back an awareness and understanding about deliberations and reasons for decisions taken.
The committee meets several times a year and well in advance of those meetings DFO organizers, after considering input from the local SFAC Chair, will provide access to agendas and information needed as a starting point for informed discussion during those meetings. The process is designed to open lines of communication and provide timely, accurate, accessible, clear and objective information concerning fisheries in the various regions.
Membership on SFACs should reflect a broad range of interests in fisheries and oceans issues in the Pacific Region that affect anglers in the local SFACs geographic area. There should be a balance of those who do not receive a significant amount of their annual income directly or indirectly from the recreational fishery (Primary Level Members) and those who do receive a significant amount of their annual income directly or indirectly from the recreational fishery (Secondary Level Members), with the Primary Level Members making up the majority of members.
